The results of approved projects from the fol­low­ing pro­grams will be avail­able here in the after­noon on Monday, 30 January 2012: Small Grants (December 2011 dead­line), Visegrad University Studies Grants (November 2011 dead­line), Visegrad Scholarships at OSA (December 2011 dead­line), Visegrad Artist Residencies in New York and the Visegrad Artist Residency Program—Performing Arts (December 2011 deadlines).

Centre for Eastern Studies (OSW), Warsaw, and the International Visegrad Fund orga­nize the pre­sen­ta­tion of the Visegrad bib­li­og­ra­phy project and the offi­cial book launch in Poland. As part of new rules adapted by the Council of Ambassadors in December 2011, the max­i­mum sup­port for Small Grant projects was raised to €6,000 and, cor­re­spond­ingly, the min­i­mum sup­port for Standard Grants was raised to €6,001. The death of for­mer Czechoslovak and Czech President Václav Havel entails the pass­ing of a great politi­cian and moral author­ity. The almost fairytale-like story when the power of the pow­er­less removed the com­mu­nist dic­ta­tor­ship in the cen­ter of Europe is very closely con­nected with his life.

His vision of Central Europe led him and his friends from Central European dis­si­dent cir­cles, who came into power by the end of the 1980s, to the idea of estab­lish­ing closer ties among the new democ­ra­cies to deal with the bur­den­some her­itage of the com­mu­nist regimes. The embod­i­ment of this effort, the Visegrad Group, came into exis­tence in 1991.

The Visegrad Group is a con­cept that Václav Havel sup­ported and advo­cated inten­sively. The results attained by the Visegrad Group dur­ing its twenty-year exis­tence have con­firmed the fore­sight of this con­cept. We have lost a real Homo viseg­radi­cus, please join us in hon­or­ing his memory.

The Hungarian Institute of International Affairs (MKI) and the International Visegrad Fund orga­nize an offi­cial book launch of the Two Decade of Cooperation—Selected V4 Bibliography project. Applicants prepar­ing project pro­pos­als for the 1 December dead­line of Small Grants are kindly requested not to leave the elec­tronic sub­mis­sion to the last minute. Please note that higher server traf­fic might cause response delays. Deadline for elec­tronic sub­mis­sion of appli­ca­tion forms is 1 December 2011 at 12 o’clock noon. Signed print­outs along with all accom­pa­ny­ing doc­u­ments can be posted on the same day at the lat­est or per­son­ally deliv­ered to the Fund by 16:30 on 1 December.

Two grantees of the Fund received pres­ti­gious art awards in the past month. Štefan Papčo—resident of the VARP in New York pro­gram—received the 2011 Grand Prize and the Best Open Studio award at the Dumbo Arts Festival 2011 in New York and Tomáš Rafa—recipient of a Small Grant—received the 2011 Oskár Čepan Award given by the Center for Contemporary Arts in Bratislava for his video art project on new nation­al­ism in Central Europe on 20 October 2011. Congratulations to both!

As of today the appli­ca­tion sys­tem is open for project pro­pos­als within the Visegrad University Studies Grants (VUSG). Deadline for sub­mis­sion is 10 November 2011.

Next selec­tion of projects within Visegrad Scholarships at the Open Society Archives takes place on 15 October 2011. The fol­low­ing two themes were selected for the 2011–2012 aca­d­e­mic year: Is There Anything Usable One Can Learn from Communism? and The History of Propaganda, Objectivity and Truth under the Cold War and Right After.

The sec­ond annual meet­ing of alumni and friends of the International Visegrad Fund takes place on Tuesday, 11 October 2011, from 18:00, on the premises of the Slovak Embassy in Kiev (Yaroslaviv val 34). Those inter­ested in tak­ing part are kindly requested to con­firm their par­tic­i­pa­tion to Mr. Luboš Veselý, Trustee for Ukraine.

Due to the fact 15 September 2011 is a state hol­i­day in Slovakia, hard-copy appli­ca­tions can be deliv­ered to the Fund per­son­ally by 16:30 on Friday, 16 September 2011; 16-September post­marks will also be accepted for appli­ca­tions sent by post. The dead­line for on-line sub­mis­sion remains the same, i.e. the sys­tem closes at 12:00 (noon) on 15 September 2011. Applicants are kindly requested to sub­mit their appli­ca­tions in advance, as higher server traf­fic can be expected.
